Radeon R5 M230 vs Radeon R9 390 8G

Intro

The Radeon R5 M230 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 780 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 320 Stream Processors, 20 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 390 8G, which has a core clock speed of 1000 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1500 MHz. It also features a 512-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 2560 SPUs, 160 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

In theory, the Radeon R9 390 8G will be 2300% quicker than the Radeon R5 M230 overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 390 8G 384000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M230 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 368000 (2300%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 390 8G will be a lot (about 926%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M230. (explain)

Radeon R9 390 8G 160000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 15600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 144400 (926%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 390 8G will be much (about 1951%) more effective at AA than the Radeon R5 M230, and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon R9 390 8G 64000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M230 3120 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 60880 (1951%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
