GeForce 940M vs Radeon R7 370 4G

Intro

The GeForce 940M has core speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R7 370 4G, which features GPU clock speed of 975 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1400 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R7 370 4G should be 1020% faster than the GeForce 940M overall, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 179200 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 163200 (1020%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 370 4G is a lot (about 143%) better at AF than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 62400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 36672 (143%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R7 370 4G is superior to the GeForce 940M, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 31200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22624 (264%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
