GeForce 920M vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The GeForce 920M comes with a GPU clock speed of 954 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 384 SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which features core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB, in theory, should be much faster than the GeForce 920M in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
GeForce 920M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 145600 (1011%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB will be much (about 131%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 920M. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 920M 30528 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 39872 (131%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB is quite a bit (approximately 235%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce 920M, and should be able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 920M 7632 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 17968 (235%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
