GeForce 9600 GT 1GB vs GeForce GTX 750 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GT 1GB comes with a clock speed of 650 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 65/55 nm design. It features 64 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 750 Ti, which comes with a clock speed of 1020 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1350 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 750 Ti 60 Watts
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 95 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (58%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 750 Ti should perform a lot faster than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 Ti 86400 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 28800 (50%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 750 Ti will be much (approximately 96%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 Ti 40800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 20800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 20000 (96%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 750 Ti is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 750 Ti 16320 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5920 (57%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
