Radeon HD 4770 vs Radeon R9 280X

Intro

The Radeon HD 4770 comes with a GPU core speed of 750 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 800 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 280X, which has GPU core speed of 850 MHz, and 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1500 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also features 2048 SPUs, 128 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4770 80 Watts
Radeon R9 280X 250 Watts
Difference: 170 Watts (213%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 280X is 463% quicker than the Radeon HD 4770 in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 280X 288000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4770 51200 MB/sec
Difference: 236800 (463%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 280X is much (approximately 353%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 4770. (explain)

Radeon R9 280X 108800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 84800 (353%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 280X should be quite a bit (about 127%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 4770, and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon R9 280X 27200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4770 12000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15200 (127%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
