GeForce GTS 150 vs Radeon R7 250

Intro

The GeForce GTS 150 comes with clock speeds of 740 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 128 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 250, which has clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1150 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R7 250 65 Watts
GeForce GTS 150 141 Watts
Difference: 76 Watts (117%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R7 250, in theory, should be a lot faster than the GeForce GTS 150 in general. (explain)

Radeon R7 250 73600 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 150 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 41600 (130%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 150 will be quite a bit (more or less 97%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 250. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 47360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 250 24000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23360 (97%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTS 150 should be quite a bit (more or less 48%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon R7 250, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 11840 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 250 8000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3840 (48%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
