GeForce 9600 GT 1GB vs Geforce GTX 760

Intro

The GeForce 9600 GT 1GB features core speeds of 650 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 64 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Geforce GTX 760, which has GPU core speed of 980 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1502 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1152 Stream Processors, 96 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 95 Watts
Geforce GTX 760 170 Watts
Difference: 75 Watts (79%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Geforce GTX 760 should be much faster than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 134656 (234%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 is quite a bit (more or less 352%) better at AF than the GeForce 9600 GT 1GB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 20800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 73280 (352%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 760 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9600 GT 1GB 10400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20960 (202%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
