Geforce GTX 760 vs Radeon HD 4830 1GB

Intro

The Geforce GTX 760 comes with a GPU clock speed of 980 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1502 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1152 SPUs, 96 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4830 1GB, which features GPU core speed of 575 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR4 RAM set to run at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 640(128x5) SPUs, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Geforce GTX 760 170 Watts
Difference: 75 Watts (79%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Geforce GTX 760 is 234% faster than the Radeon HD 4830 1GB overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 134656 (234%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 is quite a bit (more or less 411%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 4830 1GB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 18400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 75680 (411%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 760 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4830 1GB 9200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22160 (241%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
