Geforce GTX 760 vs Radeon HD 4870 1GB

Intro

The Geforce GTX 760 uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 980 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1502 MHz on this card. It features 1152 SPUs along with 96 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 4870 1GB, which features GPU clock speed of 750 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 800(160x5) Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Difference: 20 Watts (13%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 760 should theoretically perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 4870 1GB overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4870 1GB 115200 MB/sec
Difference: 77056 (67%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 760 will be much (more or less 214%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4870 1GB. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4870 1GB 30000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 64080 (214%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 760 is superior to the Radeon HD 4870 1GB, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4870 1GB 12000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19360 (161%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.

I just upgraded from hd4870 1GB to a GTX 760 OC and BF3 almost doubles in FPS, a bit disappointing.
I would have expected it to make a larger difference.
BF3 Settings: textures HIGH, everything else low and no AA.
1920*1200 @60hz
hd4870 1gb: average 45 FPS
GTX 760 OC 2gb: average 75 FPS
