GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) vs Geforce GTX 780

Intro

The GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) has a clock frequency of 650 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 850 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 336 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Geforce GTX 780, which makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 863 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1502 MHz on this particular card. It features 2304 SPUs along with 192 TAUs and 48 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 150 Watts
Geforce GTX 780 250 Watts
Difference: 100 Watts (67%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Geforce GTX 780 should theoretically perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) in general. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 108800 MB/sec
Difference: 179584 (165%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 780 will be quite a bit (more or less 355%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GTX 460 (OEM). (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 36400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 129296 (355%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 780 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 (OEM) 20800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20624 (99%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
