GeForce 8600 GTS vs GeForce GTX Titan

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GTS has a GPU core clock speed of 675 MHz, and the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 32 Stream Processors, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the GeForce GTX Titan, which has a clock speed of 837 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1502 MHz. It also features a 384-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 2688 SPUs, 224 TAUs, and 48 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GTS 75 Watts
GeForce GTX Titan 250 Watts
Difference: 175 Watts (233%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX Titan should theoretically perform a lot faster than the GeForce 8600 GTS in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan 288384 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 256384 (801%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX Titan will be much (about 1636%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GTS. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan 187488 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 10800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 176688 (1636%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX Titan is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX Titan 40176 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 5400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 34776 (644%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
