GeForce 9800 GTX vs GeForce GTX 650 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 9800 GTX features a clock frequency of 675 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 1100 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 65 nm design. It is made up of 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 650 Ti, which makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 928 MHz. The GDDR5 memory works at a frequency of 1350 MHz on this particular model. It features 768 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 650 Ti 110 Watts
GeForce 9800 GTX 140 Watts
Difference: 30 Watts (27%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 650 Ti, in theory, should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce 9800 GTX in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 Ti 86400 MB/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 70400 MB/sec
Difference: 16000 (23%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 Ti should be quite a bit (more or less 37%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 9800 GTX. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 Ti 59392 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 43200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 16192 (37%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 650 Ti is the winner, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 Ti 14848 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9800 GTX 10800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4048 (37%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
