GeForce GT 310 vs GeForce GTX 650

Intro

The GeForce GT 310 has a GPU core speed of 589 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR2 memory is set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 16 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 650, which makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 1058 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a speed of 1250 MHz on this particular card. It features 384 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 310 31 Watts
GeForce GTX 650 64 Watts
Difference: 33 Watts (106%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 650 is 400% faster than the GeForce GT 310 in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 80000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 310 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 64000 (400%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 is a lot (more or less 619%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 310. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 33856 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 310 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 29144 (619%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 650 is a lot (approximately 619%) faster with regards to full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 310, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce GTX 650 16928 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 310 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14572 (619%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
