GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs GeForce GTX 660 Ti

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) features a clock speed of 540 MHz and a DDR2 memory frequency of 400 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 80 nm design. It is made up of 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GTX 660 Ti, which comes with a clock frequency of 915 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1500 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It features 1344 SPUs, 112 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 47 Watts
GeForce GTX 660 Ti 150 Watts
Difference: 103 Watts (219%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTX 660 Ti should in theory be a lot superior to the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 Ti 144000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 131200 (1025%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 660 Ti will be quite a bit (more or less 1086%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 Ti 102480 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 93840 (1086%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 660 Ti should be quite a bit (more or less 408%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM), and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTX 660 Ti 21960 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 17640 (408%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
