GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB vs Radeon HD 4650 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB makes use of a 40 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 550 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 850 MHz on this model. It features 96 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 4650 1GB, which features core speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 700 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 320(64x5) SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4650 1GB 55 Watts
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 70 Watts
Difference: 15 Watts (27%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 4650 1GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 4650 1GB 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 32000 (143%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4650 1GB should be just a bit (approximately 9%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 4650 1GB 19200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 1600 (9%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4650 1GB is the winner, though not by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 4650 1GB 4800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 400 (9%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
