GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 vs Radeon HD 7770

Intro

The GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 features clock speeds of 625 MHz on the GPU, and 1012 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 48 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7770, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1000 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1125 MHz on this specific model. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 58 Watts
Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Difference: 22 Watts (38%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 7770 is 122% quicker than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 32384 MB/sec
Difference: 39616 (122%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 is quite a bit (about 300%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 10000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 30000 (300%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7770 is superior to the GeForce GT 220 GDDR3, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 220 GDDR3 5000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11000 (220%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
