Radeon HD 5570 vs Radeon HD 7770

Intro

The Radeon HD 5570 uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 650 MHz. The DDR3 memory runs at a frequency of 900 MHz on this model. It features 400(80x5) SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7770, which has clock speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 5570 43 Watts
Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Difference: 37 Watts (86%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 7770 should be 150% quicker than the Radeon HD 5570 in general, because of its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5570 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 43200 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 will be quite a bit (approximately 208%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 5570. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 13000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 27000 (208%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7770 will be a lot (approximately 208%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 5570, and also capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5570 5200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10800 (208%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
