GeForce 8600 GTS vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GTS features core speeds of 675 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7750, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1125 MHz on this particular model. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7750 55 Watts
GeForce 8600 GTS 75 Watts
Difference: 20 Watts (36%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 7750 should be much faster than the GeForce 8600 GTS in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 40000 (125%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 will be quite a bit (more or less 137%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GTS. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 10800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14800 (137%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 should be a lot (more or less 137%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce 8600 GTS, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 5400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7400 (137%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
