GeForce 8600 GTS vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GTS has a core clock frequency of 675 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 80 nm design. It features 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 7750, which features GPU clock speed of 800 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 512 Stream Processors, 32 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce 8600 GTS 75 Watts
Difference: 20 Watts (36%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7750 should in theory be much faster than the GeForce 8600 GTS overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 40000 (125%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 is quite a bit (approximately 137%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GTS. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 10800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14800 (137%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 will be quite a bit (about 137%) more effective at AA than the GeForce 8600 GTS, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GTS 5400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7400 (137%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
