GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB uses a 90 nm design. nVidia has set the core speed at 513 MHz. The GDDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 792 MHz on this particular card. It features 96 SPUs as well as 48 TAUs and 20 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 7750, which comes with core clock speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7750 55 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 143 Watts
Difference: 88 Watts (160%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 7750 should be a bit faster than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 63360 MB/sec
Difference: 8640 (14%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 should be a small bit (about 4%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 976 (4%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7750 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2540 (25%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
