GeForce 8800 Ultra vs Radeon HD 7750

Intro

The GeForce 8800 Ultra has a GPU core clock speed of 612 MHz, and the 768 MB of GDDR3 RAM runs at 1080 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 128 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 7750, which features a core clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 512 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 8800 Ultra should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7750 overall. (explain)

GeForce 8800 Ultra 103680 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 31680 (44%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 Ultra will be quite a bit (about 53%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7750. (explain)

GeForce 8800 Ultra 39168 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13568 (53%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 Ultra should be a small bit (about 15%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 7750, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce 8800 Ultra 14688 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1888 (15%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
