GeForce 8800 GT 1GB vs GeForce GTX 560

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GT 1GB has a GPU core clock speed of 600 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 112 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 560, which has a GPU core clock speed of 810 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1001 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 336 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 560 150 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (43%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 560 should theoretically be quite a bit better than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 128128 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 57600 MB/sec
Difference: 70528 (122%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 should be much (approximately 35%) better at AF than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 45360 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 33600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11760 (35%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 should be much (about 170%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce 8800 GT 1GB, and also will be able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 25920 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GT 1GB 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 16320 (170%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
