Radeon HD 4790 vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The Radeon HD 4790 features clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640(128x5) SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which has a GPU core clock speed of 800 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 480 Stream Processors, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 4790 should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (60%)

Texel Rate

Both cards have the exact same texel rate, so in theory they should be equally good at at AF. (explain)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 4790 is quite a bit (more or less 50%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3200 (50%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
