GeForce GT 420 vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GT 420 comes with core clock speeds of 700 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 48 SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 480 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

GeForce GT 420 50 Watts
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 63 Watts
Difference: 13 Watts (26%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should be 122% quicker than the GeForce GT 420 in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 420 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 35200 (122%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should be a lot (approximately 243%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GT 420. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 420 5600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13600 (243%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) should be much (about 129%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 420, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 420 2800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3600 (129%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
