GeForce GT 440 3GB vs Radeon HD 6670 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB has a GPU core speed of 594 MHz, and the 3072 MB of GDDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also features 144 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 24 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM), which has a clock speed of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 480 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Difference: 7 Watts (13%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) will be 48% quicker than the GeForce GT 440 3GB overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 64000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 20800 (48%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) is much (about 35%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 19200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4944 (35%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 440 3GB is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6670 (OEM) 6400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7856 (123%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
