GeForce GTS 150 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GTS 150 features core speeds of 740 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 128 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which features a core clock frequency of 625 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 160 SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 31 Watts
GeForce GTS 150 141 Watts
Difference: 110 Watts (355%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTS 150 should in theory be a lot better than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 32000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 19200 (150%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 150 is quite a bit (approximately 847%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM). (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 47360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 42360 (847%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTS 150 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTS 150 11840 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9340 (374%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
