GeForce GT 210 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GT 210 comes with clock speeds of 589 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 16 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 625 MHz. The GDDR3 memory works at a speed of 800 MHz on this specific model. It features 160 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so in theory they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) should be just a bit (approximately 6%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 210. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 210 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 288 (6%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) is a better choice, though only just barely. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 210 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 144 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
