GeForce GT 210 vs Radeon HD 6450 (OEM)

Intro

The GeForce GT 210 comes with a GPU core speed of 589 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR3 RAM runs at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 16 Stream Processors, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM), which uses a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 625 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 800 MHz on this specific card. It features 160 SPUs as well as 8 Texture Address Units and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform exactly the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) is a bit (approximately 6%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 210. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 5000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 210 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 288 (6%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) is the winner, but not by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6450 (OEM) 2500 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 210 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 144 (6%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
