GeForce GT 310 vs Radeon HD 6790

Intro

The GeForce GT 310 comes with a clock speed of 589 MHz and a DDR2 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is comprised of 16 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6790, which comes with core speeds of 840 MHz on the GPU, and 1050 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 800 SPUs as well as 40 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 310 31 Watts
Radeon HD 6790 150 Watts
Difference: 119 Watts (384%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 6790 should perform quite a bit faster than the GeForce GT 310 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 134400 MB/sec
GeForce GT 310 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 118400 (740%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 is a lot (more or less 613%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GT 310. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 33600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 310 4712 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 28888 (613%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6790 should be quite a bit (about 470%) better at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce GT 310, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 6790 13440 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 310 2356 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11084 (470%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
