GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 vs Radeon HD 3850 1GB

Intro

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 features core clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 96 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 3850 1GB, which makes use of a 55 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 668 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM runs at a speed of 828 MHz on this specific model. It features 320(64x5) SPUs along with 16 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 75 Watts
Difference: 5 Watts (7%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 is 3% quicker than the Radeon HD 3850 1GB in general, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 54400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 52992 MB/sec
Difference: 1408 (3%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 is a lot (more or less 65%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 3850 1GB. (explain)

GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 17600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6912 (65%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 3850 1GB is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 3850 1GB 10688 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 240 GDDR5 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6288 (143%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
