GeForce GTX 580 vs Radeon HD 6870

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 772 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1002 MHz on this model. It features 512 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6870, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 900 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1050 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1120 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6870 134400 MB/sec
Difference: 57984 (43%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6870 should be a little bit (more or less 2%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 580. (explain)

Radeon HD 6870 50400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 992 (2%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 580 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6870 28800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8256 (29%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
