GeForce GTX 570 vs Radeon HD 6950

Intro

The GeForce GTX 570 has a GPU core speed of 732 MHz, and the 1280 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 950 MHz through a 320-bit bus. It also is comprised of 480 Stream Processors, 60 Texture Address Units, and 40 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6950, which features GPU core speed of 800 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 1408 SPUs, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 570 4387 points
Radeon HD 6950 3240 points
Difference: 1147 (35%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6950 200 Watts
GeForce GTX 570 219 Watts
Difference: 19 Watts (10%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 6950 should perform a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 570 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 160000 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 570 152000 MB/sec
Difference: 8000 (5%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 will be much (more or less 60%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 570. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 570 43920 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26480 (60%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 570 is superior to the Radeon HD 6950, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 570 29280 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3680 (14%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.

This is absolute BS .. the forum admin's cherry pick a few games and declare a winner based on p!$$ weak, anecdotal and inconclusive tests. The GTX 570 will be a better card at higher resolutions, but the cards are likely very similar in 3D, gpu-intensive performance tasks (give or take a few fps in favor of the 570), otherwise.
