GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB vs GeForce GT 420

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB makes use of a 90 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 513 MHz. The GDDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 792 MHz on this particular card. It features 96 SPUs along with 48 Texture Address Units and 20 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all of that to the GeForce GT 420, which features core clock speeds of 700 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 48 SPUs along with 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 420 50 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 143 Watts
Difference: 93 Watts (186%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB will be 120% faster than the GeForce GT 420 overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 63360 MB/sec
GeForce GT 420 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 34560 (120%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB will be much (about 340%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GT 420. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 420 5600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 19024 (340%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB is quite a bit (more or less 266%) more effective at AA than the GeForce GT 420, and able to handle higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 320MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 420 2800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7460 (266%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
