Radeon HD 5750 1GB vs Radeon HD 6950 2GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 5750 1GB comes with clock speeds of 700 MHz on the GPU, and 1150 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 720(144x5) SPUs as well as 36 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon HD 6950 2GB, which has a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1250 MHz. It also makes use of a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It features 1408 SPUs, 88 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 200 Watts
Difference: 114 Watts (133%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon HD 5750 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 160000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5750 1GB 73600 MB/sec
Difference: 86400 (117%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 2GB is quite a bit (about 179%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5750 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5750 1GB 25200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 45200 (179%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6950 2GB is superior to the Radeon HD 5750 1GB, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 2GB 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5750 1GB 11200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 14400 (129%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
