GeForce 8800 GS vs Radeon HD 6950

Intro

The GeForce 8800 GS has a core clock frequency of 550 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 800 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 65 nm design. It is comprised of 96 SPUs, 48 TAUs, and 12 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon HD 6950, which features core speeds of 800 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8800 GS 105 Watts
Radeon HD 6950 200 Watts
Difference: 95 Watts (90%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 6950 should perform much faster than the GeForce 8800 GS overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 160000 MB/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 38400 MB/sec
Difference: 121600 (317%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 is quite a bit (approximately 167%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 8800 GS. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 70400 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 26400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 44000 (167%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 will be quite a bit (approximately 288%) faster with regards to FSAA than the GeForce 8800 GS, and also will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 25600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8800 GS 6600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19000 (288%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
