Radeon HD 4790 vs Radeon HD 6750 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 4790 comes with clock speeds of 600 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6750 1GB, which comes with core speeds of 725 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 720 SPUs as well as 36 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 4790 should in theory perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 6750 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 4790 102400 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 38400 (60%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 1GB should be quite a bit (about 36%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 4790. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 1GB 26100 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 19200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6900 (36%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 1GB should be quite a bit (about 21%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon HD 4790, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 1GB 11600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4790 9600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2000 (21%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
