Radeon HD 5850 vs Radeon HD 6750 1GB

Intro

The Radeon HD 5850 comes with a GPU core speed of 725 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1440(288x5) SPUs, 72 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon HD 6750 1GB, which features GPU core speed of 725 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 720 Stream Processors, 36 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 6750 1GB 86 Watts
Radeon HD 5850 151 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (76%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 5850 should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6750 1GB in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 128000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 64000 (100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5850 is a lot (more or less 100%) more effective at AF than the Radeon HD 6750 1GB. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 52200 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 26100 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26100 (100%)

Pixel Rate

If running with lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon HD 5850 is the winner, by far. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 23200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6750 1GB 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 11600 (100%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
