GeForce RTX 2080 vs Radeon RX 7900 XTX

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2080 features core clock speeds of 1515 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2944 SPUs as well as 184 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which makes use of a 5 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 1855 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM is set to run at a speed of 2500 MHz on this particular model. It features 6144 SPUs as well as 384 TAUs and 192 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 2080 215 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XTX 355 Watts
Difference: 140 Watts (65%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX should theoretically be a lot faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 983040 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 2080 458752 MB/sec
Difference: 524288 (114%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX will be quite a bit (approximately 156%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce RTX 2080. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 712320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 2080 278760 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 433560 (156%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XTX 356160 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 2080 96960 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 259200 (267%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
