GeForce GTX 1630 vs GeForce RTX 4080

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1630 comes with core clock speeds of 1740 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the GeForce RTX 4080, which makes use of a 4 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 2205 MHz. The GDDR6X memory works at a speed of 1400 MHz on this particular model. It features 9728 SPUs along with 304 Texture Address Units and 112 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 1630 75 Watts
GeForce RTX 4080 320 Watts
Difference: 245 Watts (327%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 4080 should in theory be much faster than the GeForce GTX 1630 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 734003 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 1630 98304 MB/sec
Difference: 635699 (647%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4080 should be quite a bit (approximately 1104%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 1630. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 670320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1630 55680 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 614640 (1104%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 4080 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4080 246960 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1630 27840 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 219120 (787%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
