GeForce RTX 2060 vs GeForce RTX 4090

Intro

The GeForce RTX 2060 has core clock speeds of 1365 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 6144 MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 1920 SPUs as well as 120 Texture Address Units and 48 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce RTX 4090, which comes with a GPU core clock speed of 2235 MHz, and 24576 MB of GDDR6X memory running at 1325 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 16384 SPUs, 512 Texture Address Units, and 176 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce RTX 2060 160 Watts
GeForce RTX 4090 450 Watts
Difference: 290 Watts (181%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce RTX 4090 will be 203% quicker than the GeForce RTX 2060 in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1042432 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 2060 344064 MB/sec
Difference: 698368 (203%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4090 should be quite a bit (about 599%) better at AF than the GeForce RTX 2060. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 1144320 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 2060 163800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 980520 (599%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 4090 will be a lot (approximately 500%) better at FSAA than the GeForce RTX 2060, and should be able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce RTX 4090 393360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce RTX 2060 65520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 327840 (500%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
