GeForce GTX 1630 vs GeForce GTX 965M

Intro

The GeForce GTX 1630 features core clock speeds of 1740 MHz on the GPU, and 1500 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 512 SPUs along with 32 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTX 965M, which has a core clock speed of 944 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
GeForce GTX 1630 75 Watts
Difference: 15 Watts (25%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce GTX 1630 should be a lot faster than the GeForce GTX 965M overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 1630 98304 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 34304 (54%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M should be a bit (more or less 9%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 1630. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 1630 55680 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 4736 (9%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 965M will be just a bit (more or less 9%) better at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 1630, and also should be able to handle higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 1630 27840 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2368 (9%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
