GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB vs Radeon HD 6850

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB has a GPU core speed of 1260 MHz, and the 12288 MB of GDDR6X memory runs at 1188 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 8960 SPUs, 280 Texture Address Units, and 112 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6850, which features GPU clock speed of 775 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 960 SPUs, 48 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 350 Watts
Difference: 223 Watts (176%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6850 in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6850 128000 MB/sec
Difference: 806298 (630%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB will be a lot (about 848%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 6850. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6850 37200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 315600 (848%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is superior to the Radeon HD 6850, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6850 24800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 116320 (469%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
