GeForce 840M vs GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB

Intro

The GeForce 840M comes with a core clock speed of 1029 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB, which features a GPU core clock speed of 1260 MHz, and 12288 MB of GDDR6X memory set to run at 1188 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is comprised of 8960 SPUs, 280 TAUs, and 112 ROPs.

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should theoretically be much faster than the GeForce 840M overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
GeForce 840M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 918298 (5739%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should be much (more or less 1329%) better at AF than the GeForce 840M. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 840M 24696 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 328104 (1329%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB is superior to the GeForce 840M, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 840M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 132888 (1614%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
