GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB vs Radeon Pro Duo

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB features a core clock speed of 1260 MHz and a GDDR6X memory speed of 1188 MHz. It also features a 384-bit bus, and uses a 8 nm design. It features 8960 SPUs, 280 TAUs, and 112 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon Pro Duo, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 4096 MB of HBM memory set to run at 500 MHz through a 4096-bit bus. It also is made up of 4096 Stream Processors, 256 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon Pro Duo should in theory be a bit faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB in general. (explain)

Radeon Pro Duo 1024000 MB/sec
GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 934298 MB/sec
Difference: 89702 (10%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon Pro Duo should be much (about 45%) more effective at AF than the GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB. (explain)

Radeon Pro Duo 512000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 352800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 159200 (45%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB should be just a bit (approximately 10%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon Pro Duo, and also able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 12 GB 141120 Mpixels/sec
Radeon Pro Duo 128000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13120 (10%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

One or more cards in this comparison are multi-core. This means that their bandwidth, texel and pixel rates are theoretically doubled - this does not mean the card will actually perform twice as fast, but only that it should in theory be able to. Actual game benchmarks will give a more accurate idea of what it's capable of.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
