GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 features clock speeds of 540 MHz on the GPU, and 700 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR3 memory. It features 32 SPUs as well as 16 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which features clock speeds of 2200 MHz on the GPU, and 2250 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 47 Watts
Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Difference: 60 Watts (128%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 6500 XT should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 22400 MB/sec
Difference: 125056 (558%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT will be much (approximately 1530%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 132160 (1530%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is superior to the GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GT 1GB GDDR3 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 66080 (1530%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
