Radeon R9 270 vs Radeon RX 6700 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 270 uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1400 MHz on this model. It features 1280 SPUs along with 80 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6700 XT, which features a core clock speed of 2321 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2000 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It features 2560 SPUs, 160 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 270 150 Watts
Radeon RX 6700 XT 230 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (53%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 6700 XT should perform much faster than the Radeon R9 270 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 393216 MB/sec
Radeon R9 270 179200 MB/sec
Difference: 214016 (119%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6700 XT should be a lot (more or less 416%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon R9 270. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 371360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 270 72000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 299360 (416%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6700 XT is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 148544 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 270 28800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 119744 (416%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
