Radeon RX 6700 XT vs Radeon VII

Intro

The Radeon RX 6700 XT features a GPU clock speed of 2321 MHz, and the (Unknown) MB of GDDR6 memory runs at 2000 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2560 Stream Processors, 160 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon VII, which has core speeds of 1400 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 16384 MB of HBM2 memory. It features 3840 SPUs along with 240 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 230 Watts
Radeon VII 295 Watts
Difference: 65 Watts (28%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon VII is 167% quicker than the Radeon RX 6700 XT overall, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon VII 1048576 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6700 XT 393216 MB/sec
Difference: 655360 (167%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6700 XT is a little bit (more or less 11%) more effective at AF than the Radeon VII. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 371360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon VII 336000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 35360 (11%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6700 XT is quite a bit (about 66%) more effective at AA than the Radeon VII, and also capable of handling higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 148544 Mpixels/sec
Radeon VII 89600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 58944 (66%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
