GeForce GTX 860M vs GeForce RTX 3060

Intro

The GeForce GTX 860M uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 797 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a speed of 1000 MHz on this model. It features 1152 SPUs as well as 96 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the GeForce RTX 3060, which features core speeds of 1320 MHz on the GPU, and 1875 MHz on the (Unknown) MB of GDDR6 RAM. It features 3584 SPUs along with 112 TAUs and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 860M 45 Watts
GeForce RTX 3060 170 Watts
Difference: 125 Watts (278%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the GeForce RTX 3060 should perform much faster than the GeForce GTX 860M in general. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 368640 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 304640 (476%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3060 is quite a bit (approximately 93%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GTX 860M. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 147840 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 71328 (93%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3060 should be a lot (more or less 397%) better at AA than the GeForce GTX 860M, and also able to handle higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3060 63360 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 50608 (397%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
