Radeon RX 6800 XT vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 XT makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this particular card. It features 4608 SPUs along with 288 TAUs and 128 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM runs at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this specific card. It features 5120 SPUs as well as 320 TAUs and 128 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have the exact same bandwidth, so in theory they should have identical performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT is a small bit (more or less 11%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 6800 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 58400 (11%)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have the exact same pixel rate, so in theory they should perform equally good at at AA, and be able to handle the same resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
