Radeon RX 6800 XT vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon RX 6800 XT comes with a GPU core speed of 1825 MHz, and the 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM is set to run at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is comprised of 4608 SPUs, 288 TAUs, and 128 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which comes with a core clock speed of 1825 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2000 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It features 5120 SPUs, 320 TAUs, and 128 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same memory bandwidth, so theoretically they should perform the same. (explain)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should be a little bit (about 11%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon RX 6800 XT. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 58400 (11%)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have exactly the same pixel fill rate, so in theory they should be equally good at at AA, and be able to handle the same screen resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
