GeForce 8400 GS 512MB vs Radeon Vega Frontier Edition

Intro

The GeForce 8400 GS 512MB features a core clock frequency of 650 MHz and a DDR2 memory speed of 400 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit memory bus, and uses a 80 nm design. It is comprised of 16 SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1382 MHz, and 16384 MB of HBM2 memory set to run at 1890 MHz through a 2048-bit bus. It also is made up of 4096 SPUs, 256 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
