GeForce GTX 950 vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The GeForce GTX 950 features clock speeds of 1024 MHz on the GPU, and 1652 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 768 SPUs as well as 48 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 550, which uses a 14 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1100 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 1750 MHz on this specific card. It features 512 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Benchmarks

These are real-world performance benchmarks that were submitted by Hardware Compare users. The scores seen here are the average of all benchmarks submitted for each respective test and hardware.

3DMark Fire Strike Graphics Score

GeForce GTX 950 6536 points
Radeon RX 550 3507 points
Difference: 3029 (86%)

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
GeForce GTX 950 90 Watts
Difference: 40 Watts (80%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 550 should be 8% faster than the GeForce GTX 950 in general, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 950 105728 MB/sec
Difference: 8960 (8%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 950 is a lot (approximately 40%) better at AF than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 49152 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 13952 (40%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 950 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

GeForce GTX 950 32768 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 15168 (86%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
