Radeon R9 M385X vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The Radeon R9 M385X has a GPU core speed of 1100 MHz, and the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 896 SPUs, 56 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 550, which comes with core clock speeds of 1100 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 512 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 550 is 19% faster than the Radeon R9 M385X in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M385X 96000 MB/sec
Difference: 18688 (19%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M385X should be quite a bit (approximately 75%) faster with regards to texture filtering than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

Radeon R9 M385X 61600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26400 (75%)

Pixel Rate

Both cards have exactly the same pixel rate, so theoretically they should perform equally good at at anti-aliasing, and be able to handle the same resolutions. (explain)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
